Weapons and Resources for Killing Stinkbugs DEAD!

In my war effort, which I began in earnest a little less than a year ago, I have conducted extensive research and field testing.  Below are some weapons and resources I have found to help me kill stinkbugs – DEAD.

Dead Inn Stinkbug Traps
I have deployed this weapon, but so far am disappointed in the  results. The lure does not stick well and I have only caught a few stinkbug invaders with this trap.

Strube’s Stinkbug Traps
While pricey, these have proved highly effective at killing stinkbugs at night when they are flying around. While simply hanging the original was more of an effort than anticipated, newer versions include the table-top design and are much easier to use.

Cup of Death
I actually use a jar and don’t bother with any liquid. I have also heard recommendations for adding soap or using alcohol. It’s simple, but effective. I have a stinkbug jar upstairs and one downstairs so I always have a receptacle handy for catching the stray stinkers.

Inexpensive Stinkbug Bottle Trap
Many people have sent me this link to a cheap, easy, do-it-yourself trap. One of these days I’ll find time to make it!

Cardboard Traps
I haven’t gotten around to making these yet, but they make sense!

Washington Post/Associated Press Update on Pesticides and Stinkbugs
NBC News Washington
These are announcement about a possible new use of insecticide dinotefuran for control of stinkbugs. Unfortunately, this is not a pesticide that homeowners will have access to.

Bugwise
This newsletter provides practical information on the use of pyrethroid insecticides to control stinkbugs. So far, it appears that they may be the most effect type of poison available to homeowners.

Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station
Why am I so bothered that the experts on this are still experimenting?

Penn State
This site provides a good overview of the problem and mention of some of the pesticide options.

Ask the Exterminator
This is a great article about why we are – and probably will continue to be – waiting for the magic stinkbug poison. For now, I’m relying on my Home Defense, sprayed more often than I used to, and various traps and contraptions. And my complicated Battle Plans…
